Frequently Asked Questions
How do I join CHET-SW?
CHET-SW is not a typical homeschool group with dues, contracts, and degrees of anonymity. We are dedicated to building relationships, so while we require no commitment financially or contractually we are committed to our group. Park Day becomes a priority because it is where every family comes together and discusses all that has been planned for the current and upcoming months. We ask that you join us the first Friday of the month and see if you like our laid-back style. Other than "joining" us on Park Days, for field trips, classes, fairs, etc., there are no "membership requirements."

Does your group require dues?
There are always expenses for copies, renting facilities, stamps, prizes etc., but on occasion we have families that wouldn't be able to join our group if we charged dues. It is worth it to be able to include them, and to be a pay-as-you-go group. It gives you the choice of what you are paying to do.

Why don’t you require a statement of faith to join your group?
This answer is multifaceted. The purpose of requiring a statement of faith is to be exclusionary. Are we able to be a christian group - a group whose focus is Christ - without such a statement? Maybe it is more in line with Christ's teaching to include all that want to come. We make clear from the beginning that we are a christian group: we talk about Christ and the Bible, and we pray. If someone still wants to join us without believing as we do, we now have an opportunity to show Christ's love without compromising our standards.

Is there a board or committee in charge?
No one person or faction is in charge of CHET-SW. We are parent driven meaning that if no one volunteers, it doesn’t get done. Although a few families facilitate certain gatherings to keep things rolling, no one entity is in charge of the whole group. For this reason it is important to volunteer! If you have a desire to teach a class, direct a play, or organize a field trip, go for it! There is no requirement to have a PhD. behind your name in order to serve your fellow homeschoolers.

What Co-op Classes do you offer?
Each semester brings different opportunities for our children. Some years we have a specific day where two or more classes are going on at the same time, for different ages and subjects. Almost routinely there is at least one class being offered by one or more parents. It all depends on individual parents offering individual classes, or setting up clubs around specific subjects.

What is TGIH Day?
Our annual meeting at the first of the school year is called TGIH Day: Thank God I Homeschool. This is an impassioned thanks, and the name signifies how glad we are that we’ve been empowered to keep our children home with us even when so many others are doing the August back-to-school routine. We spend the day together, drawing up the yearly calendar by months and encouraging each family to plan a field trip one month out of the year. This is usually when co-op classes, special Mom nights, particular fairs, etc are planned.
